Year 1
What happens in Year 1?
Year 1 is a fantastic year at Catton Grove as the children transition from Foundation Stage to Key Stage 1, and the main school. Children continue to learn through a mixture of linked provision and adult led activities throughout the academic year. We also have the benefit of a covered outside area and additional outdoor areas within our school grounds.
In the summer term children take part in the National Year 1 Phonics Screening, this is a statutory test where children can show off their phonic knowledge. An example of some of the words the children may have to read is below.
Example Timetable
In Year 1, we work hard to ensure your child has access to a broad and balanced curriculum whilst taking the time to focus on their strengths and interests, as well as a clear focus on their targets and moving their learning forward! Our week is packed full of important and exciting lessons which we tailor to the children’s interests.
Here is an example timetable of what our week looks like in terms of the subjects we cover and the length of learning time. Please note, each class has a slightly different timetable and sometimes there are changes that happen within the week. This is just to show a general overview of what our week may look like.

End of Year Expectations
Staff and pupils work hard to ensure that each child is making accelerated progress from their starting point. Here are some examples of what the expected standard looks like for pupils at the end of Year 1.
Maths: In Year 1, children will explore: Place Value, Addition & Subtraction, Shape, Money,Length and Height, Mass, Capacity and Temperature, Fractions, Time, Statistics and Position and Direction. Attached are some examples of what is expected in terms of these areas.

Writing: Children will write for a range of purposes. They will continue to learn how to construct accurate and interesting sentences by using capital letters, finger spaces, their phonic knowledge and a range of punctuation and vocabulary. Children will learn about key areas of writing including use of vocabulary, handwriting, spelling, punctuation and grammar. We teach this through Drawing Club and Talk 4 Writing. Drawing Club focuses around a picture book, traditional tale or a classic animation. The children produce drawings linked to the theme and then write to create a magic code, when their code is created then the magic will happen! Talk 4 Writing is where we practise a story or a non-fiction text by learning it and adding actions and then we make our own version of the text type towards the end of the unit.

Above is a list of the expectations by the end of Year 1 for writing.
Reading: Children will be taught to read and comprehend a range of text types. Over the year, we will study various books in Reading lessons and our Writing lessons too. Below are some examples of the books we look at.

We deliver the Read, Write, Inc scheme in our Phonics lessons. The programme helps children to decode words with their knowledge of sounds. Children are grouped based on what they know in order to give them the best, tailored teaching experience.

Performances
In Year 1, we are pleased to be able to invite you into the school to see your children shine in various performances. We like to invite you in for Christmas performances, Mother’s and Father’s Day celebrations and others. We can’t wait to share those special days with you!

If you have concerns about your child’s progress or have further questions about end of year expectations, please contact your class teacher to arrange a meeting. We will be inviting parents/carers in regularly to see what we are learning and also to share your child's amazing work with you.
Please note that some children will be set more personalised targets, broken into smaller steps, to enable them to succeed and make progress from their own starting point.
