Year 2
What’s New In Year 2?
Year 2 is a wonderful time at Catton Grove Primary School, and our pupils are fortunate to experience such an engaging curriculum. Throughout the year, we dive into fascinating topics, including the Great Fire of London in history and animals and their habitats in science. In English, the children also develop their non-fiction writing skills by creating detailed non-chronological reports about their very own imaginary creatures.
Example Timetable
At Catton Grove, we provide a broad, balanced curriculum that keeps our Year 2 pupils inspired and challenged. Our weekly timetable is carefully structured to balance core subjects with creative learning. Below is a general overview of the subjects we cover and the typical learning time dedicated to each. Please note that exact schedules vary slightly between classes, and daily timetables may be adjusted to accommodate special school events or learning opportunities. 
End of Year Expectations
Staff and pupils work hard to ensure that each child is making great progress from their starting point. Here are some examples of what the expected standard looks like for pupils at the end of Year 2.
Maths: In Year 2, children will explore: Place Value, Addition & Subtraction, Shape, Money, Multiplication and Division, Length and Height, Mass, Capacity and Temperature, Fractions, Time, Statistics and Position and Direction. By the end of Year 2, pupils need to be able to understand and solve problems related to these categories. Here is what is expected of a child working at the expected standard in Maths.
Writing: Children will write for a range of purposes such as: to entertain, to inform and to describe. They will continue to learn about how to construct an accurate and interesting sentence and will practise writing at length by stacking their sentences up to create paragraphs. Children will learn about key areas of writing including: use of vocabulary, handwriting, spelling, punctuation and grammar. We learn lots of this through Talk 4 Writing where we practise a story or a non-fiction text by learning it and adding actions and then we make our own version of the text type towards the end of the unit.
Reading: Children will be taught to read and comprehend a range of text types. Over the year, we will study various books in Reading lessons and our Writing lessons too.
We deliver the Read, Write, Inc scheme in our Phonics lessons. The programme helps children to decode words with their knowledge of sounds. Children are grouped based on what they know in order to give them the best, tailored teaching experience.

Year 2 Twilight!
o celebrate a fantastic year of hard work, we treat our pupils to the highly anticipated Year 2 Twilight event towards the end of the summer term! This special evening invites all Year 2 children to stay at school for a fun-filled experience after everyone else has gone home. The evening is packed with exciting activities, including football, campfire singing, and creative arts and crafts, with a delicious snack and dinner provided for everyone.
Performances
In Year 2, we are pleased to be able to invite you into the school to see your children shine in various performances. We like to invite you in for Christmas performances, Mother’s and Father’s Day celebrations and others. We can’t wait to share those special days with you!
