Year 5

Year 5 is such an exciting year with some fascinating topics. We love learning and we aim to do our best through a broad and balanced curriculum. This year we want the children to develop in confidence and resilience, have growth mindsets and be the best that they can be.

Maths is the language of the Universe! In year 5, we teach and embed sound mathematical skills through the use of the White Rose Scheme and through Maths mastery, which encourages children to problem solve, explore and enjoy maths using the principles of using concrete, pictorial and abstract methods to learn.

We teach writing through the method of ‘Talk For Writing’. This was developed by Pie Corbett and teaches children the skills to become creative enthusiastic writers. It enables children to imitate the language they need for a particular topic orally, before reading and analysing it, and then writing their own version. It produces some fantastic results.

In Year 5, we are passionate about reading. We use the Accelerated Reading program for each individual child to promote and encourage reading at home. When they have completed their chosen books, the children complete an assessment which allows us to monitor their progress and helps move their reading forward to the next level.

We also teach reading through a class novel, where the children are taught key skills which help them learn to understand and embrace reading.

We believe that we should provide a high-quality History education that will help pupils gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of Britain’s past and that of the wider world. We aim to inspire pupils’ curiosity about the past in Year 5 by teaching them about the History and relevance of the Ancient Maya, the Anglo Saxons and the Victorians.

We go on 2 main exciting school trips this year. The first is linked to the History topic of Victorians, where we visit Gressenhall all dressed in period costume and take part in drama led learning. The second is a Geography field trip to Cromer in the Summer term. Although subsidised by the school, there will be a small parental contribution to cover some of the costs.

The other subjects that make up our fantastic curriculum in year 5 are Geography, Science, Art and Design, Computing, Spanish, Religions and other world views, PE and Healthy Bodies, Healthy Minds.

At Catton Grove, we have 11 Core Values that underpin the curriculum and ethos throughout the whole school. We introduce a new core value each month in which children work to earn certificates showing they have tried to embed each value into their daily learning and school life.

If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact the class teacher or the Year 5 leader.
